Bat Acoustic Monitoring Technician at Fort Moore

 Fort Moore (formerly Benning) Bat Acoustic Monitoring Project, Summer 2023

Description:

Auburn UniversityÂ’s College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment is hiring a technician for bat acoustic work on Fort Moore in Columbus, GA. Duties will include installation and maintenance of passive acoustic bat monitors. The work schedule will vary (including long hours, weekends, and nights, as needed). Applicants should expect to work alone under challenging, hot conditions on an active military base.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Deployment of ultrasonic bat detectors (e.g., AnaBat, SM4, etc.).
  • Use of bat detectors, global positioning system devices, maps, compass, and/or digital cameras as well as the ability to maintain equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate and coordinate effectively with AU supervisors and Fort Moore collaborators, including adhering to very strict scheduling procedures and completing surveys.
  • Conduct field work while adhering to AU and Fort Moore safety requirements, using good judgment to work safely and efficiently.
  • Record field data, organize and process acoustic data, and organize and maintain equipment.
  • Assist field supervisors and crew leaders with various tasks (reviewing weather data, datasheets, and completing inventory of field equipment regularly).
  • Must be able to work independently and interact professionally and respectfully with project managers, biologists, and Fort Moore personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school degree, plus 2 years of experience in wildlife management or research or 2 years of college course work towards a bachelorÂ’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or an equivalent degree; current undergraduates or other enthusiastic workers are encouraged to apply.
  • Must have a flexible schedule and be able to work long hours and different times and days (including weekends and nights, as needed) on short notice.
  • Applicants must be able to work long hours in hot, adverse conditions.
  • Field work will entail hiking to acoustic survey sites with up to 30 pounds of field equipment in varying terrain, sometimes in inclement conditions.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, and ability to operate a governmental or university 4WD vehicle, on- or off-road.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BachelorÂ’s Degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or an equivalent degree.
  • Experience/interest in working in the field, conducting surveys, and collecting field data.
  • Strong interest in bat conservation and experience with bat acoustic surveys, acoustic detectors, GPS units, data collection, compass, and other field equipment.
