two bat technician positions and one bat educator position

 Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife has two bat technician positions and one bat educator position available. The technician positions will also include Delmarva fox squirrel telemetry and photo-monitoring projects.

Biological Aide III

$14.75/hour

 

Description

This is a full time (37.5 hours/week) position that will work out of he McKay Wildlife and Hunter Education Field office in the Woodland Beach Wildlife Area in Smyrna, Delaware. It will begin in late May and end in late August.

 

Delaware is hiring a technician to help with bat projects and with a Delmarva fox squirrel translocation project. This is a unique opportunity to get experience with several different types of bat projects as well as help rebuild Delmarva fox squirrel populations through translocations.

 

Position's primary responsibilities include preparing for and conducting field work for bat projects. Incumbent will deploy acoustic arrays, run acoustic transect surveys, assist with volunteer communication and management, analyze bat calls, prepare outreach materials, resolve bat/human conflicts, and assist with data entry. May also conduct bat catches and telemetry studies. Will occasionally help with a project at Fort Delaware State Park that involves educating visitors on the importance of bats, the effect of White-nose Syndrome on bats and what people can do to help protect bats. Position will also assist with other wildlife research projects including translocations, telemetry, data management and GIS work associated with a Delmarva fox squirrel project. Must be able to carry heavy and awkward equipment in difficult weather conditions (heat, humidity, insects). Work schedule is variable and includes nights, holidays, and weekends.

Biological Aide II

$12.97/hour

 

Description

This is a part time position (25-30 hours/week) to help protect bats at Fort Delaware State Park (Delaware City, Delaware). This is a unique opportunity to help protect wildlife while working at a state park that is a Civil War-era fort situated on an island in the Delaware River. It is open to the public in the spring, summer, and fall and it includes living history demonstrations for individuals and groups. The fort maintains temperatures and humidity that also make it ideal for hibernating bats in the winter and it is a site where bats have been documented with White-Nose Syndrome.

 

This position is focused on educating visitors to Fort Delaware on the importance of bats, the effect of White-Nose Syndrome on bats and what people can do to help protect bats. Position will include escorting organized groups such as school and scout groups, as well as general fort visitors, through parts of the fort where bats hibernate while ensuring that park visitors are aware of rules and guidelines. Position will also be responsible for maintaining decontamination equipment and keeping decontamination stations clean and well- stocked as well as maintaining records and reports detailing daily activities. Other duties may include assisting park visitors and helping with other wildlife projects, including deployment of bat acoustic equipment, assisting with Delmarva fox squirrel projects, and managing calls from the public regarding bats. From Memorial Day to Labor Day hours will be Wednesday-Sunday and holidays. Individual will work under various field and weather conditions (biting insects, hot and cold conditions, and long hours) and work around boats and water.

Description
