Summer undergraduate research assistants - UMD Built and Urban Ecosystem Ecology Lab

The Pavao-Zuckerman Built and Urban Ecosystem Ecology Lab in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology is looking to hire two part-time (10-20 hours/week) Undergraduate Student Research Assistants for Summer 2023.

Position #1: Urban forest and green infrastructure soil analysis. The undergraduate assistant will work with PhD students and the PI in analyzing soil samples taken from local stormwater green infrastructure and urban forest research settings to determine physical, nutrient, and biological properties and processes. The assistant will also help set up a suite of automated apparatus for measuring soil hydrologic properties and contribute to the development of laboratory workflows and protocols. The position would primarily be lab-based, with occasional opportunities for field sampling throughout the summer. Previous experience in lab-based soil and ecosystem analyses is a plus but not necessary. The student must show a demonstrated work ethic, attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and stick to a punctual work schedule.

Position #2:  Literature review of agrivoltaic policies and cost-benefits. The undergraduate assistant will work with a post-doc and the PI in reviewing available literature on agrivoltaic systems to develop a background understanding of the political, economic, and environmental barriers and opportunities to adopting agrivoltaics in Maryland. This work will contribute to the development of focus groups conducted with local farmers and energy producers. The position would primarily be based in literature review and analysis, with the potential opportunity to help facilitate focus groups. Previous experience in literature review, strong writing skills, and interest in environmental policy and economics is desired. The student must show a demonstrated work ethic, ability to work independently, attention to detail, strong note-taking skills, and a willingness to learn.

The pay rate for both positions will start at $15/hour – funding is available for this summer, with the potential for extension into the fall.

Applications should be emailed to Dr. Mitch Pavao-Zuckerman mpzucker@umd.edu. The applications should include an updated resume, a brief cover letter detailing which position you are applying for that explains your relevant experience and interest for that position, and a schedule detailing the proposed blocks of time (Monday – Friday from 8am to 6pm) that you would be able to work during the summer. We are looking for the assistants to start before the end of May.
