They harm native animal and plant populations and affect the overall health of ecosystems. They also impact public utility operations and affect tourism and outdoor recreation. All told, invasive species can cost the United States as much as $120 billion EACH YEAR. This special topics seminar covers the wide variety of programs USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service uses to address harmful invasive species. Issues may include nutria, mute swans, feral swine, brown tree snakes, and insects that are tree and forest pests.

The successful candidate should have demonstrated ability as a qualitative bat expert with experience completing mist-net surveys and have a USFWS collectors permit with experience completing bat acoustic surveys, qualitatively identifying federally-listed and candidate bat species such as the Indiana bat, northern long-eared bat, tri-colored bat, and little brown bat. The cost is $30 to help cover the costs of lunch and logistics. We do have some scholarships available if the $30 is too much for your students that may be interested, but space is limited for those. Scholars Program
The Global Sustainability Scholars program brings together talented undergraduates for a paid summer immersive experience, where students travel abroad, conduct research, and build their professional network in real-world sustainability issues.Each year we select undergraduates to join a GSS cohort and the larger international sustainability solutions community. Scholars get paid over two summers while focusing their training and research on a theme within Sustainability.

- GSS Scholars must be in their third year of study (Juniors) of undergraduate studies, currently enrolled, in good standing academically, and working toward their first undergraduate degree in sustainability sciences or related fields.
- GSS Scholars must be U.S. citizens and have the proper legal documentation to travel abroad (passport).

We have decided to extend the application deadline for International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA)'s 2023 Summer Internship Program for all applicants to Friday, February 10th!
Through this paid internship, selected applicants gain real-work experience in an industry that makes a difference!
Twelve paid, 10-week project-based virtual part-time internships explore subjects relevant to students’ academic studies through hands-on experience with IFPA and the produce industry. There are three available internships in each of these four areas:

Job Opportunity:Forest Monitoring Technicians in Pennsylvania and West Virginia
Summer 2023
The Pennsylvania State University Department of Ecosystem Science and Management is hiring seasonal technicians to collect forest monitoring data in national parks in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. This work is part of a long-term forest health monitoring program that provides park staff with crucial information on the condition of parks' forests and how they are changing over time.
Demonstrated experience in forest ecology, meticulous data collection skills, strong work ethic, and positive attitude are required. Applicants should enjoy working outdoors in a variety of conditions and be able to identify common trees and shrubs of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Applicants must be able to follow detailed field protocols and work as a member of a team. Familiarity with entering data into Access databases on field tablets is preferred. Applicants should be able to navigate in the woods by compass and using GPS.
Crew members will be expected to carefully follow required safety precautions. The ability to hike long distances carrying a 25+ pound backpack and work long hours in adverse conditions (e.g. steep terrain, hot/humid weather, rain, stinging/biting insects, irritating plants) and in remote field sites is a must.
The positions will begin in May 15, 2023 and continue through the end of August with compensation of approximately $20 per hour depending on experience.

The Rocky Mountain Sustainability and Science Network (RMSSN) Academy is a two-week science and sustainability program that travels to Rocky Mountain, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone National Parks. Students gain experience with natural and cultural resources in and around the parks with research focus on topics such as pollinators, mammals, human interactions, and more! Dates are still to be finalized but are tentatively scheduled for the last two weeks of May, 2023. More details to come in future communications.Some additional benefits of RMSSN:
