The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of Research, Division of Applied Veterinary Research is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Biologist.  The Division of Applied Veterinary Research conducts applied and basic research using animals and animal systems in support of current and evolving regulatory issues.  The Division provides research solutions to issues of animal health, food safety of animal derived products, and other animal industry associated technologies.  This position will be filled through FDA’s Staff Fellowship program.  The appointment is up to 2 years with opportunity for renewal.

Roles and Responsibilities:

As a Biologist on the Aquaculture Team, your primary responsibility will be preparing aquatic systems for fresh water and marine aquatic species based on animal use protocols using cold or radio-labelled drugs and requests received from the Agency.  This includes preparation and dosing of fish, maintenance of the systems during the study period, necropsies, collection, preparation and shipping of tissues, sample analyses, and recordkeeping.  You will also assess drug concentrations for pharmacokinetic analyses and microbial cultures from tissue and blood from aquatic animals.

Additionally, you will maintain and construct freshwater and marine aquaculture systems, conduct health assessments of fish, and use and maintain equipment needed for the functionality of the systems.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Applicants must have knowledge of multiple aspects of aquaculture research, including knowledge of fish biology, fish physiology and fish species characteristics relevant to the housing, feeding, care and handling of aquatic organisms, knowledge of aquatic animal husbandry and biohazard control, and the ability to implement procedures for measuring and maintaining water quality in aquatic systems and familiarity with water quality monitoring equipment.

Details:

This position is located in Laurel, Maryland and is available immediately.
