POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Position Title: Coordinator (Nutrient Management Advisor-UME Baltimore County)
Position Number: 121768
Unit: AGNR-Environmental Science & Technology

Description:

Nutrient management advisors develop nutrient management plans for agricultural producers to balance nutrient inputs with crop requirements, thus enhancing production potential, improving farm profitability, reducing excess nutrient inputs into the Chesapeake Bay and enabling producers to comply with the Water

Duties:

  • Develop and deliver nutrient management plans using specially designed software and software
  • Explain nutrient management planning and plans to agricultural producers;
  • Demonstrate proper techniques of soil and manure sampling for agricultural producers and when
  • appropriate, collect soil and manure samples;
  • Sample and analyze soils for soil nitrate (PSNT and FSNT)
  • Perform phosphorus risk assessments when required to complete plans; and
  • Demonstrate and train agricultural producers in equipment calibration and yield check procedures

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • BS in an Agricultural, environmental or natural resource science.
  • Personal transportation and a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of agricultural production practices and cropping systems.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds and traverse uneven terrain and willingness to work outside under adverse
  • If offered employment by UME, individual will be required before beginning job assignment to obtain a background check by the State of Maryland and the FBI.
  • Experience working with agricultural producers.
  • Certification by the State of Maryland as a Nutrient Management Consultant.
  • Individual must pass nutrient management certification exam within one year of initial employment date and once employed, must maintain certification.

Details:

The individual is supervised by the Extension Agricultural Science Educator in county/counties where assigned with programmatic direction from Program Coordinator. The advisor will be assigned to the University of Maryland Extension office in Baltimore County. Geographical assignment may be changed depending upon workflow in neighboring counties and the evolving nature of the position.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience, with base salary of $37,200. This is a contractual position with a retirement subsidy.
