Agent Associate Position

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This position is a full-time 12-month term appointment. The Agent Associate – 4-H Youth Development is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating specific components of the Carroll County 4-H program which targets the needs and interests of a diverse target audience of youth ages 5-18 as well as adult volunteers. The Agent Associate will function as an active member of the Carroll County 4- H team working under the direction of the State 4-H Program Leader and Area Extension Director with local programming leadership from the county tenure-track 4-H Educator.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs in 4-H youth development focusing on camping, shooting sports, and environmental science.
  • Camp Leadership
  • Plan, implement and evaluate residential camps and shooting sports camps to support programming priorities and needs.
  • Provide active support and supervision of residential and shooting sports camps.
  • Coordinate and participate in recruitment, training, and development of 4-H camp adult volunteers.

  • Expand the 4-H Club program by assisting with creation of new clubs and recruiting new members through community outreach opportunities.

Qualifications:

Required–

  • Bachelor's Degree in youth development, education, environmental science or science-related field.

Urban Landscape Design Position

Bona Terra is a small family run urban landscape design, maintenance, and installation business that specializes in artistic installations, bay-friendly rain gardens, conservation planting, and careful maintenance. We prioritize organic, sustainable practices and protecting the local watershed. We are a creative group of artists, musicians, and writers, and support each other in those endeavors.

Crew members install rain gardens, conservation planting, and conduct landscape maintenance on residential properties. Usually working in teams of 2 or 3 people.

Applicants should be able to safely perform heavy lifting, pushing, pulling of various landscaping equipment and materials including, but not limited to, backpack blowers, large containers of mulch/plant material, and rototiller. Safely operate equipment with all necessary personal protective gear. Proper use of hand tools, shovels, pick axes, brooms, etc. Identify Miss Utility markings and participate in responsible digging. Provide information to crew leader or project foreman for tracking hours and materials. Keep work sites and home base neat and clean.

Any experience in outdoor building, gardening and/or carpentry is a plus. Ability to read a scale drawing, understand cross-section designs and build according to a plan is also a plus.

Employees will be asked to:
Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Bend and kneel up to 9 hours a day.
Walk up to 8 miles a day, sometimes uphill and on uneven terrain, often while carrying, pushing, or pulling equipment, materials, and debris.
Safely load and unload vehicles.

Baltimore Farmer's Market Hiring for 4 Positions

If you are looking for part time work over the summer or through the fall, Maryland Farmers Market Association is hiring four positions. Each involves helping to run a farmers market program. All pay $18/hour.
The Farm Alliance is seeking  part-time help (10-15 hrs/week) coordinating our Saturday morning Waverly Farmer's Market stand. Responsibilities include: being the primary staff member at the market, inventorying,  purchasing, and organizing market supplies, keeping accurate sales records, driving the Farm Alliance vehicle to market, and coordinating use of the vehicle on non-market days. Saturday schedule is 5:30am-1:30pm weekly except for January through March when it is biweekly. The Market Coordinator reports to the Executive Director.
Market day duties include: preparing for market (5:30 am), working market (7am-noon), and cleaning up after market (noon-1:30pm). Other duties will include keeping accurate sales records, making cash deposits, ordering market supplies, and tracking and communicating market data. One farmer member of the Farm Alliance will serve as the second staffer at the market stand to support the Market Coordinator every Saturday.

Saturday Farmer’s Market:

Preferred Education
·         Horticulture or related field, with complete course work in plant physiology, plant anatomy, genetics, botany, and chemistry, or equivalent Master Gardner Certification, combination of education and experience. Technical skills be familiar with and preferably able to operate equipment such as seeder, harvester irrigation, tiller, plug board, scale, and computer. The manager is expected to hold a valid Maryland State driver's license. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, work in high temperatures during summer months and cold during winter. Deep Creek Lavender Farm Internship

Deep Creek Lavender Farm is a small farm located in Accident, Maryland just a few miles from Deep Creek Lake.  Focusing on agrotourism, Deep Creek Lavender Farm is open weekends and Mondays through the summer and has nearly 1500 lavender plantsvegetable gardens, sunflowers, chickens, bees, composting, mushrooms, and more for visitors to see and learn. 
This year’s focus, in addition to the lavender will be installation of solar panels, solar cooking, and increasing the size of the vegetable garden.  The farm also has a farm store focusing on lavender based products, classes and events focused on lavender, garden tours and more.
We are close to Deep Creek Lake for boating, swimming, fishing.  In addition the county is filled with great hiking, mountain biking, kayaking and other outdoor activities.  The towns of Accident, Friendsville and McHenry have a great local foods vibe with Moon Shadow Café, Firefly Farms, Harvest Moon Organic Market.  In addition the farm is 40 minutes from Morgantown, WV the home of West Virginia University. 
The intern will work 25-40 hours per week with two weekdays off per week.  The intern will have a separate small apartment at a neighboring farm within walking distance (no charge to intern).  Fresh eggs and produce from the vegetable garden will be provided as well.   A monthly stipend of $600 will be paid (or prorated if only a portion of the month is worked). The internship will run from Mid-May through mid-August or other agreed to dates.
We hope to learn as much from our intern about farming, agriculture, sustainability, etc. , as we teach about lavender, agrotourism, business management, networking, marketing and more.   
Duties of the internship include any of the following:
Planting, pruning, harvesting lavender
Laying weedcloth
Cutting grass using tractor/riding mower
Working in the vegetable garden
Feeding chickens/cleaning coop
Teaching classes, giving tours

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal GIS Internship - AmeriCorps

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking ONE GIS Intern to dedicate 34 weeks in support of the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal National Historical Park. The intern, in collaboration with the Park, will conduct historical research on the legal documentation of extant rights-of-way throughout the Park. The intern will compile historical data on rights-of-way, including width, terms of easement, spatial location, deed and/or land tract number, parcel owner, associated fees/costs, and other characteristics. 

This opportunity is intended for conscientious, enthusiastic, individuals with an interest in the National Park Service and developing their GIS skills.

Position Description: The intern, in collaboration with the Park, will conduct historical research on the legal documentation of extant rights-of-way throughout the Park. These records are contained in the Park archives, regional office, and with the National Archives and Records Administration. The intern will compile historical data on rights-of-way, including width, terms of easement, spatial location, deed and/or land tract number, parcel owner, associated fees/costs, and other characteristics. These data will be organized in a spatial and tabular format using ArcGIS or related geospatial software. Spatial locations will be digitized when feasible, and field GPS data will be collected for rights-of-way that may be hidden from view with aerial images. The intern will create a geodatabase in GIS software that includes spatial locations and associated metadata of all Park rights-of-way. 

Specific projects will include:

Compilation of historical data on rights-of-way, including cost, width, term of easement, spatial location, type of right-of-way, deed and/or land tract number, and company/individual that holds the right-of-way; Digitization of known locations of rights-of-way; GPS data collection of rights-of-way and historic structures on National Register of Historic Places; Creation of geodatabase in GIS software including spatial locations of rights-of-way and all associated metadata; Identify rights-of-way in which collaborative environmental restoration with the right-of-way owner is feasible; Develop land restoration plans in collaboration with right-of-way owner; Editing and completing existing geodatabase of historic structures. 
Qualifications: Applicants for the position must hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as education/interpretation, ecology, botany, biology, history, natural resources management, environmental science, or related disciplines.

Pathways Intern (Environmental Protection Specialist)

Participants in the program will be exposed to the Federal work environment and will learn the mission of the Federal Transit Administration and it's role and responsibilities to the public transportation industry.

Responsibilities:

The Pathways Environmental Protection Specialist:


  • Guides the FTA regional offices and grant applicants in fulfilling their NEPA and NEPA-related responsibilities for proposed transit projects and transportation plans by providing guidance and advice on procedural and technical matters, by performing FTA reviews of complex impact assessments and analyses, and by preparing return correspondence on project-related environmental issues directed to FTA headquarters.
  • Takes a leading role in developing and implementing agency-wide regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines related to the analysis and mitigation of the environmental and community impacts of proposed transit projects and transportation plans, including assessment of impacts in the following areas: land use, displacement of businesses and residences, noise and vibration, air quality, wetlands and water quality, ecologically sensitive areas and endangered species, historic and archeological resources, parklands, contaminated soil or property, safety and security, secondary development, and community disruption.
  • Reviews congressional and departmental legislative proposals and regulatory proposals related to environmental issues, and prepares the written recommendations and comments of the office. Meets with staff of other Federal agencies to discuss these proposals, comments, and recommendations. Prepares oral or written briefing material and decision documents for use by senior officials. Assists FTA legal staff in preparing briefs and consulting on litigation related to the environment.
  • Guides the preparation of guidance documents and memoranda, website material, and training courses on environmental analysis methods and procedures for transit project development and transportation planning, for use by environmental and transportation planners throughout the country.
  • Performs other assigned activities of the office related to its environmental responsibilities, such as developing and managing environmental research and oversight projects, and developing the office's program plans and budgets.

Qualifications:

This position has an education requirement. You MUST provide UPDATED transcripts that show any/all degrees conferred, current grades and registration with cumulative GPA to support your educational claims (acceptance letter is also required if applicable to current academic status). 

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree in community planning; or related field such as urban affairs, architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, sociology, geography, economics, political science, or public administration that included at least 12 semester hours in the planning process, socioeconomic and physical elements of planning, urban and regional economic analysis, and development finance.

Columbia Heights Green Urban Farm Internship – Summer 2018

Are you passionate about sustainable farming? Urban agriculture? Food systems? Then, we are
looking for you! The Columbia Heights Green is seeking one intern to assist with coordinating
volunteers, workshops, and trainings on sustainable food systems. The Columbia Heights
Green is a community-run urban farm in northwest Washington DC. The CoHi Green is
committed to creating sustainable food systems and healthy communities. Learn more about the

The CoHi Green intern will

• Organize weekly gardening work hours for community members
• Train volunteers on basic gardening and farming techniques
• Track weekly farm production
• Work with youth groups and local elementary schools on sustainable agriculture
• Coordinate workshops such as “Composting 101” and “Container Gardening”
• Work with local food banks to provide fresh, organic produce
• Coordinate with partner urban farms in Washington DC
• Promote and educate the community about the CoHi Green and our sustainability efforts
through fliers, blogs, brochures and other content

Interns will work a minimum of 10 hours per week (or as determined by their academic
department) throughout the summer of 2018. Interns are encouraged to commit two semesters
to the CoHi Green, extending through the Fall semester. The intern will be required to track
activities with weekly status reports.
Qualifications: You must LOVE getting your hands dirty and being outside! CoHi Green Intern
must have strong verbal communication and organizational skills. Attention to detail and
analytical skills are also essential. Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and
PowerPoint) is required. The intern must be comfortable working with diverse groups. Familiarity
with horticulture, sustainable agriculture, food systems, and social justice issues are a plus.
People with social media, blogging, graphics design experience are encouraged to apply.
Internship Credit: Academic credit may be available for this position. Students must talk with
their academic advisor to see if internship credit is available through their academic department.
Students are responsible for determining internship requirements, such as hours worked and
any academic projects, as well as covering the tuition- related implications of accepting the
internship. Columbia Heights Green will not pay for course credits.
Prerequisites: Interns must be a current University of Maryland graduate or undergraduate
student with at least sophomore standing. A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA is recommended.
Interns are expected to have a strong interest in sustainability, a professional work ethic, and a
desire to make our food systems more sustainable. In addition, interns must be disciplined and
self-motivated as they will take the lead on their own projects. Students in all majors are
encouraged to apply.

Interns are required to have a demonstrated commitment to campus sustainability and service
initiatives. Previous volunteer experience with campus programs and groups is required. Please
describe this experience in your application. Examples of campus programs include the
Sustainable Food Working Group, campus vegetable gardens, Office of Sustainability,
Recycling Program, Food Recovery Network, Farmers Market, Campus Arboretum, and more.
Relative service projects conducted off-campus will be considered.

Do you love being a Terp and studying in ENST and ​ the College of AGNR? Do you remember what it was like applying for college and having questions you were happy to get answered? Do you want to be that person who answers those questions?

Well you’re in luck, because AGNR is searching for some new Ambassadors to join our team!

Ambassadors are current AGNR students who are selected to represent the College to the community and are selected on the basis of leadership, scholarship, and desire to promote AGNR to prospective students. This is a volunteer position. Minimum qualifications to become an Ambassador include:
  • Full-time student status at UMD College Park in an AGNR major
  • At least a cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Sophomore status, or completion of at least 2 semesters in an AGNR major
  • Commitment of 5-10 hours each semester for at least 1 full academic year to the AGNR Ambassadors
  • A general understanding of the college admissions and applications process.
