Sustainability Planning Intern - Department of Energy & the Environment

Location:  Washington, DC

Position Description:
The Sustainability Planning Intern will be assigned to DOEE’s Urban Sustainability Administration (USA). The intern’s primary responsibility is to work with USA staff to develop and implement dynamic communications strategies and help support community engagement around the Sustainable DC Plan including the plan’s five year update – Sustainable DC 2.0. The intern will be part of a small planning team at the forefront of the initiative to make DC the greenest, healthiest, and most livable city in the United States. Preferably, this internship is full time (40 hours per week), but a part time internship (20 hours per week) is possible if necessary.

Detailed Description:
DOEE’s Urban Sustainability Administration’s mission is to develop innovative policies and programs to address sustainability, green building, green infrastructure, climate change, waste management and other cross-cutting environmental issues and increase the long-term environmental sustainability of the District.

Duties:

  • Assist in the drafting of the Sustainable DC 2.0 plan;
    • Analyze feedback on the SDC 2.0 Outline document to help inform the Sustainable DC 2.0 plan update;
    • Research best practices to be integrated into the Sustainable DC 2.0 update;
  • Develop and implement creative and innovative community engagement platforms to solicit input on Sustainable DC 2.0;
  • Identify organizations and stakeholders to engage with as part of the Sustainable DC 2.0 process;
  • Publish a monthly sustainability e-newsletter that reaches an audience of 7,000+ individuals.
  • Managing social media accounts, including Twitter and Facebook.
  • Updating the Sustainable DC website with new events, programs, and resources;
  • Tracking sustainability-related news stories and events;
  • Creating a biweekly volunteer e-mail; and
  • Developing multimedia or interactive outreach tools such as photos, videos, and presentations in collaboration with other departments/agencies.
Qualifications:

  • Currently in pursuit of master's degree (or about to enter his/her senior year of undergrad) in Urban and Regional Planning or related field
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite
  • Proficiency with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Wordpress; knowledge of new social media techniques
  • Strong community outreach and engagement experience
  • Strong communications skills
  • Excellent researching, writing and editing skills
  • Skilled with managing multiple projects at once and meeting deadlines
  • Self-starter and able to work independently and as part of a team
