Wildlife Management Intern - US Army Corps of Engineers

This is a great opportunity to work with natural resource managers along the Mississippi River for the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Rivers Project Office, consisting of 49,000 acres of public lands including rivers, lakes, wetland, prairies, and bottomland forests. This internship will focus on wildlife management activities, with an emphasis on wildlife monitoring, avian research, and field work. The intern should have moderate knowledge of standard inventory and monitoring survey methodologies. The intern will also gain experience with natural resource management activities such as wetland management, prairie restoration, forest inventory, and invasive species management.

Duties will include:
- Herpetological Monitoring
Work with USACE Wildlife Biologists to collect data on amphibians and reptiles of the Mississippi River. The primary focus of the project is to determine populations of amphibians and reptiles on Ellis Island near West Alton, MO. Work will include collecting using pitfall traps, and identifying, measuring, and recording many different species.
- Avian Monitoring
Work with USACE Wildlife Biologists to collect data on birds of the Mississippi River. The primary focus of the project is to determine populations of birds in the Upper Mississippi River System. Work will include conducting bird counts and identifying species by sight and call.
- Bat Monitoring
Work with USACE Wildlife Biologists to survey bats along the Mississippi River. The primary focus of this project is to determine populations of bats in floodplain habitat of the Upper Mississippi River System. Work will include mist netting, handling, and measuring bats. This work will occur after sunset at night and may run for several hours during the night.
- Plant Propagation
Work with USACE Foresters to grow plant species at the Rivers Project Office greenhouse. The primary focus of this project is to produce plant plugs with the intent to plant these plugs to improve forest, prairie, and wetland habitats. Work will include ensuring proper conditions for plants to grow.
The intern will have a flexible work schedule, working most weekends and having two days off during the week.

This position provides a $170/week living allowance, a $40/week commuting allowance, and a one-time $1,100 travel stipend. There is no housing available for this position. A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle are required for this position.
