Objective:
The Aquaculture Center at the NRG Energy Chalk Point Power Plant is looking for a summer student intern (12 weeks). The Aquaculture Center, in conjunction with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Service, serves as a major contributor to Chesapeake Bay fish restoration. The Center participates in two ongoing projects: raising and then releasing fingerling of troubled fish species into the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and raising sturgeon for growth and reproductive studies as well as for education.

Responsibilities:


  • Assist with pond preparations and maintenance.
  • Assist with hatchery and fisheries maintenance, including cleaning, understanding hatchery mechanics, pumps and motors.
  • Pond seining and cleaning.
  • Record and data keeping.
  • On call – emergency response when needed.
  • Assist with community and school outreach.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited College or University, working towards a bachelors degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences, and classified as a Junior or Senior.
  • Must have strong interests in fisheries/aquaculture/aquatic science.
  • Must have interests in environmental education and outreach.
  • Must have strong computer skills – proficient in MS Word, Excel, and internet use.
  • Must have strong communication skills.
  • Must have basic mechanical skills.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs safely.
  • Must be able and willing to work in very dirty environments.
  • Must be able and willing to work in very hot and humid environments.
  • Must be available to work after hours, weekends and holidays when needed.
