Iowa State University Summer Research Internship Opportunity

The George Washington Carver Summer Research Internship Program at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, has been impacting and engaging the minds of high school and undergraduate student program participants for over 25 years. The internship program promotes “science with practice” by exposing interns to research opportunities under the direction of College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) research faculty members.

The program seeks to:

• improve the research enterprise through increased diversity
• champion the value of graduate education
• prepare and recruit the best and brightest for undergraduateand graduate education at Iowa State University
• bridge the gap between lack of access to technology/information and opportunities to engage in experiential learning in an effort to increase the participation of students of color in STEM fields.

Projects/research activities vary based on the expertise of the faculty mentor to whom the intern is assigned.  Disciplines commonly providing opportunities are:

• agricultural and biosystems engineering
• agricultural education and studies
• agronomy
• animal science
• biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology
• ecology, evolution and organismal biology
• entomology
• food science and human nutrition
• genetics and genomics
• development and cell biology
• horticulture
• natural resource ecology and management
• plant pathology and microbiology
• sociology

Undergraduate Program:
The Undergraduate experience lasts eight weeks. Undergraduate students are provided with room and board on campus, round-trip airfare, and a stipend of $3,000 (2018). NOTE: Graduating seniors are eligible to apply.

Programming:

Interns are required to:

• participate in a professional experience which requires 40 hours
per week
• complete a research project in coordination with their faculty
mentor
• prepare an abstract and written report
• present their work (oral or poster) at the Research Symposium at the end of the program.

Each summer intern will also participate in:

• weekly professional development
• educational activities.
• weekly educational seminars
• social and cultural activities.

Residence assistants are available evenings and weekends for support and program coordinators are in frequent contact with each intern.

To be eligible students must be:

• U.S. citizens or permanent residents
• 3.0 or above student at his/her university or high school
