Wildlife Society Science Writer

The Wildlife Society — a non-profit scientific and educational association dedicated to excellence in wildlife stewardship through science and education — seeks a Science Writer to write feature and news articles for its award-winning member magazine, The Wildlife Professional, and to contribute articles to the Society’s website.

Members of the Society are professionals who work in various settings, including state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consulting companies focused on habitat conservation and other activities. Our communications channels emphasize sound scientific management and conservation of wildlife and wildlife habitats, rather than conservation and animal advocacy issues that other organizations pursue on behalf of lay audiences. We also use our communication channels to highlight the accomplishments of our members.

Working with a small team in Publications and Communications, the Science Writer will be responsible for researching assigned articles and short news items that are published in The Wildlife Professional, a bi-monthly publication that goes to all of the Society’s 9,000 members. The Science Writer will also pitch article ideas to the editors that are posted on the Society’s website, wildlife.org. As a member of the communications team, some of the articles assigned to the Science Writer will have a promotional angle, such as articles that highlight the accomplishments of the Society’s members or promote our annual conference.

The ideal candidate will possess a talent for reporting and writing, excellent interpersonal skills when interacting with colleagues and members, and in-depth familiarity with issues in wildlife science, conservation and management. Other desirable skills include the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggle multiple responsibilities, produce accurate and well-constructed content on deadline and willingly make revisions to articles based on editors’ feedback.

Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience in science writing and/or journalism; a background in science is preferred. Master’s degree preferred.

 Proven written and oral communication skills and an ability to translate complex science into readable and engaging prose.
 Knowledge of AP Style
 Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to work cooperatively with a small editorial team.
