Alice Ferguson Foundation (AFF) seeks a dynamic, environmentally focused leader to teach environmental education field studies to students, grades K-12, of the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The AFF Educator will work in the two environmental education programs of the Alice Ferguson Foundation: Hard Bargain Farm (grades K-6) and Bridging the Watershed (grades 6-12) dependent upon our programming needs.

Responsibilities include teaching standard-aligned, curriculum-based, outdoor field studies to students grades K-6 at Hard Bargain Farm or at participating schools in an outreach capacity and/or students grades 6-12 at regional national parks. Use and maintenance of educational equipment for field studies is an important part of this position, along with collecting and reporting of data. Educators also assist with teacher workshops and other educational opportunities as needed.

This part-time position requires actively working and teaching children outdoors in natural surroundings under various outdoor environmental conditions as well as in the classroom. Reliable transportation is a must!

Education & Skills Required: 

• Bachelor’s Degree (preferred) in environmental science, environmental studies, natural sciences, science education, elementary/secondary education, agricultural science, natural resources management related field OR equivalent level of work experience in the indicated fields, along with:
• Experience teaching and/or working with children and/or adolescents

• Currently certified in adult First Aid and CPR (strongly preferred)

Agricultural Health Study - Research Assistant

The Agricultural Health Study is funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in collaboration with the US EPA and NIOSH. Citizen Science Internship at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center

Citizen science is the active participation of volunteers in scientific research.  It can take the form of collecting data, working alongside researchers in the lab and the field, and communicating project results.  At SERC, citizen scientists engage in projects ranging from archaeology to invasive species research.  Citizen science project coordination involves a wide range of activities, including volunteer recruitment, training, and management, communicating the methods and results of SERC citizen science projects to volunteers and to members of the public orally and in writing, working with scientists to identify roles for volunteers in their research, and tracking the progress of ongoing citizen science projects.

Internship:  The citizen science intern will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of citizen science projects, involving a variety of labs and topics, over the course of the internship.  Responsibilities will include working with adult and student volunteers in the field, participating in volunteer training activities, creating content for the citizen science project webpages, and working with partner organizations to implement citizen science activities.

Agricultural Conservation Planner - The Watershed Agricultural Council

Location: Walton, NY

The Watershed Agricultural Council is seeking an Agricultural Program Conservation Planner to be responsible for the development of Whole Farm Plans (WFP), maintenance and monitoring of existing WFPs and the implementation of conservation practices within the West of Hudson (WoH) Catskill/Delaware Watershed region of the New York City drinking water supply.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in agronomy, environmental science, agriculture, natural resource management or related disciplines (i.e. biological sciences). Substitution of an Associate’s Degree in similar field of study and at least two years relevant field experience will be considered; Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM) Certified Nutrient Management Planner (CNMP) certification preferred. Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain assigned WFP’s (new and revised) to support the WAC Watershed
• Agricultural Program work plan and yearly goals for WAC participants/landowners following established WAC/WAP policies, Guidelines and SOP’s.
• Follow the NYS AEM CNMP planning process for development of WAP prioritized WFP’s.
• Develop nonstructural Best Management Practice (BMP) procurement packages on farms such as pasture management plans, prescribed grazing plans and fencing systems.
• Educate landowners on their benefits and fully explain the requirements for their successful implementation, operation and maintenance requirements. Clearly explain design packages and procurement procedures to participants and coordinate project implementation with contractors and producers.
• Provide practical experience in the survey, design and construction inspection and oversight of agricultural Best Management Practices (BMP) including diversion ditches, waterways, crossings, subsurface drain lines, spring developments, barnyard, water exclusions and manure storages.
• Coordinate with Program participants and engineers to file application for necessary State, Local and Federal permits and obtain signatures as required for implementation of certain
• Best Management Practices (BMP’s) and track the permit review and issuance process.
• Develop, implement and maintain Conservation Plans with USDA partners as needed to include, stake out the CREP boundaries with landowners. GPS the CREP area for accurate acreage measurement. Calculate rental rate and PIP payment projection for landowner decision making.
• Assist in the maintenance and follow-up of CREP contracts as needed.
• Develop GIS maps using Arc View that denote fields, soil types, water resources and topography to include in management plans.
• Assist with innovative solutions and designs to solve water quality problems.
• Annual Status Reviews as assigned.
• Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.

Masters Degree Opportunity in Fish Health

The fish health group (College of Veterinary Medicine/Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Experiment Station) at the Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center in Stoneville, MS is seeking MS applicants to investigate emergent Edwardsiella spp. strains in ornamental and catfish aquaculture in the southeastern United States.  The position is supported by a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Southern Regional Aquaculture Center titled “Increasing Understanding of and Developing Management Strategies for Edwardsiella ictaluri in Ornamental Fish”.  This position is ideal for candidates who wish to gain experience in aquaculture, fish disease, bacteriology, molecular biology and bioinformatics. 

Applicants should be self-motivated, able to work independently or in groups, have a strong scientific curiosity and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment where priorities can change frequently and fluid adaptability is the norm. The successful applicant will evaluate molecular, biological and serological differences between archived and contemporary Edwardsiella ictaluri isolates from catfish and ornamental aquaculture through genome sequencing, plasmid profiling, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and serological analysis.  Previous experience in any of the aforementioned techniques is ideal, but not required.  There will also be opportunities to work with NWAC researchers on other projects outside the applicant’s specific project, providing a breadth of benchtop and field experience that is atypical for most graduate programs.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or related areas with a GPA >3.0.  Candidates who have successfully completed a DVM may also apply.  The GRE must be taken but there is no specific score required for acceptance.  The candidate should possess exemplary organization and communication skills, a strong work ethic and the ability to work as part of a team in less than ideal environments. 

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated research experience in microbiology, molecular biology or immunology and evidence of productive scientific communication (conference presentations, peer-reviewed manuscripts, etc.)  

Terms of Position: Optimally, we are seeking an applicant to begin August 2018, but will accept applications for Spring 2019 as well.  We have support for 2 years, although additional years (if needed) may be funded through any combination of additional grant funding, graduate teaching assistantships, and other departmental support.

Program Basics

The National Capital Region (NCR) of the National Park Service (NPS) is made up of over 30 NPS park units organized in 13 administrative units. From the White House and the National Mall to Prince William Forest, from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, these parks tell the stories of our nation’s past. The parks help preserve significant natural and cultural resources near densely populated urban centers. The NCR parks are important national treasures serving millions of visitors each year. Participants of this project will help enhance each visitor’s experience.

Rock Creek Park is located in Washington, DC. It is comprised of nearly 3,000 acres that includes nature, history, and recreational opportunities. The population of Washington, DC is diverse--with people of many cultural backgrounds.

Specifics about position

The member will be working in Rock Creek Park's Division of Interpretation, Education, & Outreach. The member will work closely with the public, by representing the National Park Service at community activities/events, co-leading efforts to demo/further develop a BARK Ranger program, and developing/posting info on the park's Facebook page--including helping to manage the first-ever park photo contest on Facebook.

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

Research potential event opportunities and review potential opportunities with supervisor.
Develop at least three engaging/interactive activities to share with event participants to choose from when representing the park/National Park Service at events.
Keep records of event opportunities, event contacts, number and quality of contacts made, etc.
Develop at least two new outreach exhibits for use at events/activities.
Work with the Division of Interpretation, Education, and Outreach to refine and develop programming and messaging to better serve these communities.
Learn about key park information--nature, history, recreational opportunities--and visitor contact skills to be able to best help park visitors at a staffed park location (Nature Center, Peirce Mill,on a trail in the park, or at an off-site event).
Develop/update short responses to frequently-asked questions to best help people obtain the information they need quickly.
Present interpretive programs.
