Scientist Position - Crop Modeling

Location:  Boston, MA

Become a member of AIR’s market leading team creating state-of-the-science products and delivering best-in-class consulting services to a variety of clients engaged in agricultural risk management. Apply your skills to a variety of projects covering various perils and different crop insurance programs in the United States and worldwide.  Use your expertise and our tools to help develop, enhance, manage, and apply risk modeling solutions to a variety of client applications. Work in close collaboration with an experienced team of scientists, engineers, analysts, and statisticians to incorporate the latest modeling technologies into cutting-edge risk assessment systems.
Main responsibilities, but not limited to:
  • Develop and enhance natural hazard models for agricultural risk assessment in the United States and around the world, including in emerging markets
  • Develop and enhance models relating agricultural risk factors such as extremes in temperature and precipitation, soil moisture deficits and other stresses to crop damage and yield loss across a range of spatial scales
  • Develop and enhance computer algorithms relating crop yield and insurance policy terms and conditions to insurance claims
  • Write technical documentation for internal use and distribution to clients
  • Work as a member of a multi-faceted research team
  • Create and deliver presentations of analysis methods and results to coworkers and senior management
 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to gather, understand, and critically analyze data from all relevant sources of natural hazard information pertaining to agricultural risk
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new concepts and skills and to meet project objectives
  • Knowledge in programming with statistical packages, R preferred
  • Practical experience in a compiled programming language such as C, C++, C# or Fortran
  • Familiarity with manipulating large data sets using SQL
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with GIS and use of remotely sensed data products a plus
  • Familiarity with crop insurance programs a plus
 Requirements:
  • PhD. in a branch of Natural Science or Engineering with related experience in mathematical modeling, or M.S. with three years of relevant experience
  • Background in insurance, crop risk, meteorology, or economic modeling a plus
