GIS Program Management Intern

The Coastal NOAA's Office of Coast Survey (OCS), the largest program office within the National Ocean Service, was originally formed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807. Coast Survey maintains the nation's nautical charts, surveys the coastal seafloor, responds to national maritime emergencies, and searches for underwater obstructions and wreckage. In support of Navigation Response Branch, the intern will:
  • Research chart histories to identify the source for assigned nautical chart discrepancies (PA, PD, ED, Rep, etc.) in order to determine an appropriate disproval radii for hydrographic field units.
  • Process satellite derived bathymetry (SDB) in order to provide reconnaissance information for field prior to deploying to shallow, changeable areas to provide added safety and mission planning support or be used for direct nautical chart updates as Dangers to Navigation (DTON) reports when necessary.
  • Generate CARIS .CSAR grids from shapefiles and digital elevation models provided by NOAA's Remote Sensing Division (RSD) in for junction analysis for hydrographic surveys.
  • Provide support to the NRB Project Manager by following an established SOP to ensure that NRB is compliant with applicable environmental regulations.
Required Skills: 
0 - 2 years of experience in Earth Science, Environmental Science, Geography, Information Systems, Ocean Engineering, Oceanography, Physical Sciences, Remote Sensing Technology, Spatial Analysis Geoscience or Engineering. Must have basic familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS including shapefiles and geodatabases. Knowledge of Microsoft office products and Adobe PDF functionality. Ability to work independently and then communicate results of work. Ability to work in a team environment and strong writing skills. CARIS Bathy DataBASE experience and Safe Software FME experience, desirable.
Must be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.

Education:
Undergraduate student of Earth Science, Environmental Science, Geography, Information Systems, Ocean Engineering, Oceanography, Physical Sciences, Remote Sensing Technology, Spatial Analysis Geoscience (e.g., geography, GIS, environmental science) or Engineering (e.g., Civil Engineering, Geodesy, Environmental or Mechanical) program.
