Scientist Intern - Atkins

Location:  Miami, Florida

SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business has been providing infrastructure planning, engineering, construction, environmental consulting, urban planning, architecture, and program management services to public and private clients across the United States for more than 50 years.

Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Miami Group as an Scientist Intern.  Under supervision, performs a variety of routine technical tasks to assist engineers or scientists working in transportation, utility, environmental, or other technical services of the company.

In this role we are looking for a team member to provide GIS support using the ArcGIS platform to assist with environmental constraints analysis on a project by project basis. The ArcGIS platform will be utilized to analyze various types of environmental influences (e.g. wetlands, threatened and endangered species, contamination, land rights/ownership interest) to provide clarity as to the environmental protective actions that will need to be contemplated during the subsequent project phases. This candidate will need to be able to work in a team environment and the current expectation is a part time as needed basis. There is the potential for field work, so the candidate needs to be accustomed and prepared to work in hot and humid conditions.

Job Duties:
  • Analysis of existing information, performing field activities, collecting samples, calculations, interpreting results, and preparing basic date and scientific documents and reports for both public and private sector customers. The work may include environmental site assessments, marine resource evaluations, and wetland assessments and surveys. However, the emphasis of this position is on environmental impact assessment and permitting with the local, state and federal agencies.
  • Gathers, logs and summarizes field notes or other data to be used by technicians or professionals in technical studies or projects.
  • Establishes and maintains records or files of technical data or documents.
  • Performs mathematical calculations.
  • Performs field surveys that required field species identification, data collection and data management.
  • Assists in the preparation of reports, permits and other technical documents.
  • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

Qualifications:
  • Able to work in various outdoor settings that may require strenuous work.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Knowledge of GIS.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Effective in a group environment.
  • High degree of self-motivation.
Education:

B.S. or B.A. in a field of Science to commensurate with hiring discipline. Minimal experience is required of incumbents with directly related Bachelor's degree; no experience is required with a Master's degree.
