Renewable Energy Operations Internship - Planet Found Energy Development

Position: Agricultural Renewable Energy & Nutrient Recovery Facility Operator Intern
Pay: $3,000 - $5,000 Stipend, TBD by experience and availability
Responsibility: Full Time
Effective Dates: May 21 – August 24, 2018 (with possibility of extension)
Company Overview:  Planet Found Energy Development, LLC, (PFED) is a Maryland-based company leveraging a Combined Anaerobic Digestion and Nutrient Capture System (AD + NCS) process to produce renewable energy,recover nutrients, and eliminate odor from poultry litter and other organic wastes in the Chesapeake Bay Region and beyond. The company was founded in 2012 with the goal of developing a technology to address the ostensibly dueling concerns of environmental stewardship and agricultural economic viability on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Description of the Position:
Planet Found Energy Development, LLC (PFED), is seeking a part-time Facility Operator Intern to be based out of its Pilot Facility in Pocomoke City, Maryland. The applicant should have a background and active focus in science, agriculture and/or engineering, be adaptable to a multi-faceted business and research environment, and be interested in participating in the ongoing development of an agriculturally based renewable energy and nutrient recycling company. This position reports directly to the PFED Facilities Manager, and will improve plant productivity by
providing daily support on-site. This position will require occasional weekend work and overtime.
The Operator Intern position is a 3-month position with the possibility for extension.

Responsibilities include:

  • Facilitate the operation of PFED’s AD + NCS pilot facility in Pocomoke City, Maryland, by:
    • Learning and operating the PFED facility’s anaerobic digesters and NCS equipment;
    • Providing maintenance and upkeep of the equipment and facility;
    • Conducting routine process testing and analysis; and
    • Developing personal skills and competencies, including testing, maintenance strategies,
    • monitoring plant processes and maximizing productivity
  • Collaborate with PFED’s Facilities Manager to:
    • Manage the biogas collection system to safely and cost-effectively maximize both the quantity and quality of biogas for processing;
    • Recommend process refinements designed to improve production methods and reduce overhead costs;
    • Evaluate plant equipment and processes, and recommending design modifications to eliminate malfunctions, improve efficiency and increase environmental sustainability;
    • Suggest innovative tools and software to improve facilities controls, data management and overall efficiency
    • Provide technical support for facility production processes, as required
  • Assist PFED’s Facilities Manager by:
    • Safely and reliably implementing efficient operating strategies;
    • Facilitating compliance with regulatory requirements;
    • Demonstrating leadership in process and operational safety at all times, and demand that of others, including plant personnel, visitors, contractors; and
    • Supporting safety procedures and personnel policies directed by Company personnel and safety departments.
Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or demonstrated progress) in an Engineering or Technical discipline
  • Familiarity with equipment operations and materials handling including but not limited to; Compressed Air systems, Centrifugal Pumps, Electrical Systems, Plumbing Systems, Boilers, Generators, PVC, Woodworking, Metalworking, & Operation of Farm Equipment
  • Ability to work extended hours and shift work as business needs dictate
  • On call as required in a working rotation with Facilities Manager
  • Proven, hands-on mechanical and troubleshooting ability
  • Ability to use Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides and all analogous Microsoft Office software
