Digital Media and Communications Intern - Rock Creek Conservancy

Location:  Bethesda, MD

Description:
Rock Creek Conservancy is the only non-profit dedicated to protecting Rock Creek and its parkland as a natural oasis for all people to appreciate and protect. The Digital Media and Communications intern will assist the Communications Manager in the creation and publication of digital content. This position will primarily be responsible for producing engaging content for the Conservancy’s blog, social media channels, website, and e-newsletter. The intern will also gain experience in other RCC communication materials as needed including print collateral and press relations. The intern may be asked to be available for weekend work occasionally. This is a great opportunity for a communications student to have an immediate and lasting impact.  This is an unpaid position. Requested Start Date: Rolling.  Hours per week: Negotiable. Minimum 10 hrs/week.  Duration: Negotiable depending on candidate. 3 month minimum.

Duties:

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the Rock Creek Conservancy digital community by maintaining the RCC presence on various social media platforms, creating content for the Rock Creek Blog; and assisting with the updating of the website.
  • Assist in strategic press outreach through writing press releases, list building, and the development of press events.
  • Create engaging multimedia, graphic design, and written content for publication on RCC social media channels, RCC blog, and RCC website.
  • Curate and publish content for the RCC monthly e-news letter.
  • Use social media and web analytic tools to report on performance on all platforms and develop strategies to optimize reach.
  • Update the events page so that it is accurate and up to date.
  • Perform basic website site management tasks as necessary (removing expired content, broken links, etc.)
  • Assist in the development of an inter-departmental communications strategy and editorial calendar.
Qualifications:


  • A bachelor’s degree or completing a bachelor’s degree.
  • Completed relevant classwork.
  • Familiarity and comfort with all social media channels including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Detail oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the Rock Creek watershed is preferred.
  • Prior knowledge of basic HTML.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience with DSLR photography and videography is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the Joomla CMS is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Salesforce is a plus.
  • This is an unpaid internship. You may need to bring your own computer and other resources to complete projects and tasks.
Keystone Project: Every 3-month+ communications internship will culminate in a keystone project that supports Rock Creek Conservancy’s mission to restore Rock Creek as a natural oasis for all people to appreciate and protect. This project proposal will be submitted to your supervisor at the beginning of the internship. Example projects: photo essay, short documentary video, press event, blog series, or social media campaign.
