Park Naturalist II- Montgomery County

Location: Montgomery County, MD

Description: Candidate will provide interpretive and educational programs in natural history to various groups such as schools, scouts, general public and summer youth campers. Conducts research in various subject matters and upon approval of senior staff, will present the material in programs and camps. Respond to visitor, telephone, and staff inquiries concerning natural history and conservation matters. Greets visitors, provides interpretive program information, promotes positive public relations for the nature center programs and encourages public appreciation for the natural environment. Will provide care, enrichment, training, and maintain health of live amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates, and birds of prey.

Duties:


  • Plans, develops, and conducts nature programs to diverse audiences in varied settings (camps, special events, school groups, general public)
  • Experience working with children
  • Experience in creating and conducting environmental education lessons
  • Maryland natural history knowledge
  • Willingness to work outside
  • Experience training raptors (at least 2 years), relying solely on principles of positive reinforcement within operant conditioning, focusing on husbandry behaviors and programming for the general public
  • Willingness to work with animals and maintain care of live animals (reptiles, amphibians, insects, fish) while upholding established animal welfare practices
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Superior communication skills
  • Experience supervising volunteers, including but not limited to, all aspects of navigating the volunteer database system, recruiting, interviewing, and managing volunteers. The volunteer program will be a primary responsibility for this position.
  • Organizational ability
  • Team player; promotes a positive work environment
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain one during first 6 months of hire)
  • Ability to pass FBI and MD Background checks as well as a CPS (Child Protective Services) check
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Skills:

  • Bilingual-Spanish as second language preferred


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Natural, Life, or Physical science or related field; and two years of park naturalist experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
