Bilingual Educator - National Audubon Society

Location:  Baltimore, MD

Job ID:  2018-3689

Description:
Patterson Park Audubon Center requires a bilingual educator to prepare and instruct conservation education programs. The position primarily involves teaching adult education programs in Spanish, as part of an Audubon signature program, Bird Ambassadors. The position also involves an important role in program promotion and outreach and requires written and spoken Spanish language fluency.
Audubon seeks to hire a Spanish speaking educator to design, implement, and evaluate a series of informative programs to share the challenges of migratory birds and the local solutions. Though the exact format of the activities depends on feedback from an advisory group of the original Bird Ambassadors and can be adapted according to new participants’ feedback, Audubon’s experience working with Latino families in Baltimore guides us. We know the programs need to be hands-on, fun, and accommodating of parents with young children. Content will focus on migratory birds to start, then will shift to birds and the Chesapeake Bay.

Duties:

  • Prepare, deliver, and evaluate lessons, activities, and projects for adult community members with a kid-friendly component. Lead all activities, field questions, and troubleshoot in Spanish.
  • Refine existing curriculum and develop/integrate new content into written format; focus on Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore, and birds. Write and revise lesson plans in English and in Spanish.
  • Coordinate with Audubon’s veteran Bird Ambassadors and work with partner organizations to recruit new participants, lead grassroots outreach in southeast Baltimore communities. Establish effective promotion of activities and incentives for program participation.
  • Recruit and schedule volunteers, promote and prepare materials, and supervise interactive learning programs and hands-on projects.
  • Maintain accurate program records and high quality education programs; write reports on program achievements.
  • Assist with animal care, office duties, and general program outreach as needed.
Qualifications:

  • Experience in community organizing and/or conservation education, preferably in an urban setting.
  • Written and spoken fluency in English and Spanish required.
