Environmental Compliance Specialist - Clean Earth Inc.

Location:  Hagerstown, MD

Description:  
The Environmental Compliance Specialist is based at the Clean Earth of Maryland operating location and has responsibility for a wide range of tasks to ensure that the facility operates in compliance with its permit requirements.

Duties:

  • Review testing procedures, analysis, site history and waste description for contaminated soil that is being considered for acceptance at the facility. 
  • Assist in approval of new and ongoing projects to ensure material meets acceptable criteria and maintain the records in accordance with the permit requirements.
  • Direct/perform sampling of both incoming material and processed batches of outgoing material to ensure compliance with permit requirements as well as end user requirements.
  • Evaluate lab reports and advise facility Operations Manager when staged material can be moved into treatment and when processed batches can be released for end use.
  • Provide guidance to facility Operations Manager regarding blending of incoming material to assure that processed batches meet end use specifications.
  • Assist facility Operations Manager in addressing questions of compatibility of incoming material with permits, profile sheets, and other approval documents.
  • Respond to requests for information from customers and from Clean Earth sales representatives regarding acceptable and unacceptable material, testing requirements, the approval process, permit status, and other matters within your purview.
  • Review Clean Earth of Maryland, Clean Earth of Greater Washington, and applicable facility permits to ensure and verify compliance with permit conditions. 
  • Perform routine inspections, sampling, and reporting as required by permits and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain records according to permit requirements.
  • Participate in facility audits and inspections performed by state regulators and by customer representative.
Qualifications: 

  • BS in Environmental Sciences, Health and Safety, or Chemistry (preferred), but other science degrees will be considered. 
  • 2 years experience in EH&S or related field such as environmental consulting.
  • Strong problem solving, written, verbal, analytical and presentation skills and the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of staff throughout the company.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
