Water Quality Research Assistant - Chesapeake Bay Foundation

Location:  Annapolis, MD

Description: 
This is a two year term position with the possibility of extension. This position will report directly to the Director of Science and Agricultural Policy. The individual will assist in data compilation and analysis for CBF’s State of the Bay report, as well as help track progress toward implementing the Clean Water Blueprint, including implemented practices, pollution reductions, and financial expenditures. In addition, the candidate will be involved in projects related to evaluating the environmental benefits of agricultural conservation practices. These projects involve computer models to estimate the nutrient load and greenhouse gas emission reductions due to conservation practices as well as some field work. The individual will track and compile relevant information, learn how to input data into the models, generate graphics, and assist with grant tracking and reporting.

Duties:

  • Assist with data compilation and analysis on a variety of topics, including:
    • a. State of the Bay indicators
    • b. State progress implementing the Clean Water Blueprint, including pollution reductions and best management practices
    • c. Cost data for implementing the Blueprint


  • Use modeling tools, including on-farm tools and the Chesapeake Assessment Scenario Tool (CAST) to evaluate benefits of best management practices
  • Participate in field work to collect soil, crop and water samples on farms, including sample shipping and handling and management of collected data.
  • Assist with grant reporting for projects related to environmental markets, soil health, and agriculture
  • Attend meetings, draft memos, and assist with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: 

  • KNOWLEDGE: Undergraduate degree with educational focus on environmental science, agriculture, biology, or related fields; Strong analytical and organizational skills, including Microsoft Office experience, specifically with Excel; Familiarity with Chesapeake Bay Program progress tracking and process-based computer models for agriculture, a plus; Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision; Commitment to environmental protection and the Chesapeake Bay. Strong communication skills. Knowledge of ArcGIS a plus.
  • PROBLEM SOLVING: Must be able to work independently, anticipate issues, create effective organizational processes for compiling and tracking complex information; Ability to synthesize and summarize complex material.
  • ACCOUNTABILITY: Attention to detail; Responsible for timely completion of assignments and the accuracy of all work. Responsible for regular communication of status of work, workload and problem encountered.
  • STRATEGIC IMPACT: Effective, efficient, polite handling of CBF’s relationships, partners, and volunteers is very important to the success of the department’s work, and to CBF’s reputation.
