Development & Marketing Internship - The Jane Goodall Institute

Location:  Vienna, VA

Description:  
The Jane Goodall Institute, a global environmental nonprofit based in Vienna, VA is seeking a Development Intern. This is a unique opportunity to aid a great cause while gaining experience with nonprofit fundraising, marketing and more.
Interns in the Development, Marketing & Communications Department work on a wide variety of projects to help advance and manage the Institute’s fundraising and communications efforts. The selected intern will work with the development team supporting the fundraising efforts for major gifts, foundations, corporate giving, and membership. This position will also assist other departments as needed, so an enthusiastic, cooperative spirit ready to frequently take on “other duties as assigned” would be the best fit.

Time Commitment: 
Minimum 15 hours a week, at least for a 3-month duration.

Desired Qualifications:  

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Creative problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities.
  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word, and the use of online research tools.
  • Professional demeanor and telephone manner.
  • Previous development experience preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated interest in conservation and international development is a plus.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Assisting with strategic donor and prospect research including individual, corporate and foundation donors, compiling information from multiple online sources to share with senior staff and helping assess corporate environmental records, philanthropic priorities of funders and individuals.
  • Assisting with donation acknowledgments and stewardship mailings.
  • Assisting with preparation for donor meetings and outreach.
  • Supporting donor cultivation events as needed, including venue research and invitation mailings.
  • Helping maintain donor database including the streamlining of duplicate records, updating relationships, and contact information.
  • General administrative duties for the department.

Compensation:
The position is unpaid, but academic credit can be arranged. With an internship program focused on independent study and work, intern experiences with JGI generally serve well in university course systems, and many schools welcome students to use their experience as an opportunity to earn credit toward their undergraduate or graduate degrees.
