Social Marketing Intern - Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments

Salary: $ 15.30/hour undergraduate
Effective date: Immediate. Open until filled.
Duration:  Full-time or part-time. Minimum of one year of commitment.


Position Specifications: COG has an immediate opening for an Intern to assist with running COG’s regional Community Engagement Campaign (CEC), to help with committee work, and public engagement, via social media (Twitter and Facebook). There are three major elements to the CEC campaign:
a) Promoting the value and safety of tap water, via TapIt Metro DC. TapIt is a network of over 1,000 locations committed to refilling any reusable water bottle for free.
b) Promoting the protection of water infrastructure and source water quality, including drought messaging, landscaping, and  Protect Your Pipes messaging. Protect Your Pipes is an educational initiative highlighting the importance of the proper disposal of grease, “flushable” wipes, and medications.


The Intern would work independently with guidance from COG staff in coordinating regional websites and social media messaging on the above campaign elements, and support COG staff with committee work.


The responsibilities of the Intern may include, but not be limited to:
  • Twitter and Facebook messaging on TapIt, Protect Your Pipes, and drought.
  • Updating the TapIt and Protect Your Pipes websites regularly to ensure up-to-date messaging and timely posts.
  • Tracking and periodic reporting of web and social media analytics.
  • Support TapIt businesses, and public information sharing on social media, as well as responding to public inquiries via email or social media. 
  • Liaise customers with appropriate utility channels of communication.
  • Helping to organize committee conference calls and meetings/webinars, take notes, and prepare call/meeting summaries.
  • Collecting survey responses to measure behaviors/attitudes towards CEC tenets/objectives.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The position requires an interest in water/wastewater, public health and environmental stewardship. The Intern must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and collaborative acumen (polite, energetic, enthusiastic), shrewd judgement, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks. The Intern must be organized and diligent. Strong knowledge of Twitter and Facebook, social media analytics, and basic website skills are required.


Minimum Qualifications:

Enrollment or completion of a Bachelor’s degree program in science communications, marketing, environmental sciences, public health, water resources, or a related field. Related work experience will be considered. Having a valid driver’s license is required.
