Description:
The selected candidate is responsible for behavioral observations on our dolphin colony. This internship's primary purpose is to gather data on our dolphins that our marine mammal and animal health staff can utilize to continue to provide the best possible animal welfare for our Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins. Throughout the program, the candidate will have the opportunity to learn about dolphin behavior, social structure, and natural history from our team of experts. There is limited hands-on animal contact during the internship.
Duties:
- Record behavioral observations on our dolphin colony over the course of repeated, multi-hour sessions.
- Complete charts or graphs based on observations for medically complex animals.
- Complete computer Animal Welfare Trak program weekly, alongside marine mammal trainer.
- At the completion of the program, the intern will give a 20-minute presentation based on the information they learned and what they participated in over the course of the internship.
Qualifications:
- Candidates must have good swimming skills.
- Ideal candidate should be comfortable in small spaces, able to sit for long periods of time, able to use a ladder, and prepared to work in wet or slippery conditions.
- Must work well as a team member.
- Computer skills with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word, as well as a working knowledge of tablet or camera recording usage is preferred.
- Terms require 24 hours per week of work for 5 weeks. Terms require 8 hours per day, three days per week of work.
- Must receive college credit while completing a minimum of 120 hours of work within the selected term.
