Description:
CSIS is seeking a research intern for the Sept 2018 – Jan. 2019 period to support the Simon Chair’s Reconnecting Asia Project – a CSIS initiative that explores the evolving connectivity infrastructure of the Eurasian landmass. The team’s research has been featured in international outlets such as the Financial Times, The Economist, and National Geographic. The position is research and data entry intensive and therefore requires excellent time management skills and careful attention to detail. Candidates should function well in a fast-paced team environment, adapt quickly to a wide variety of research and analytical tasks, and have strong written and oral communications skills. Team members will have regular opportunities to contribute research, input, and ideas for analytical pieces. Data science and GIS- related experience is highly desired.
Duties:
- Conduct research and data entry tasks related to infrastructure development
- Compile daily newsletters and manage Reconnecting Asia social media outlets
- Contribute to analytical products through research, ideas, and general awareness of relevant news, publications and international events
- Assist with the online publication process for news and analysis updates
- Various other research and logistical tasks as assigned
Qualifications:
- Candidates must have strong English-language writing and research skills, be effective critical thinkers, and have strong attention to detail
- Must be able to function well as part of a team
- Practical and/or academic background in at least one of the following areas is desirable:
- International Relations
- History
- Geography or Geographic Information Systems
- Data Science and Statistical Software (R, Python)
- Environmental Science
- Economics
- Regional Studies (Asian Regions)
- Energy
- Proficiency in any of the following languages is preferred, but not required: Mandarin, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Urdu/Hindi, Farsi, Turkish, Thai, Vietnamese, or South Slavic languages
- Experience with GIS software, regression analysis, coding, statistical software, or Adobe products is preferred, but not required
- Curiosity, a sense of humor, and a strong interest in U.S. foreign policy all preferred
