Rock Creek Conservancy Media/Public Relations Intern

Location:  Bethesda, MD

Description:
Rock Creek Conservancy is the only non-profit dedicated to protecting Rock Creek and its parkland as a natural oasis for all people to appreciate and protect. RCC’s Public Relations Interns help monitor news stories, identify press opportunities, develop targeted press lists, staff press events, assist with preparing talking points and interview briefing materials, and assist in the writing and distribution of press releases and media advisories.
The intern will also gain experience in other RCC communication materials as needed including digital media and print production. Candidate must provide their own transportation to and from the office or field assignments. Candidate would need to use his/her own laptop, but access to the Adobe Creative Suite will be provided if necessary. Candidate would be required to use their personal cell phone for social media on occasion. This is an unpaid position.

Duties:

  • Develop targeted press lists.
  • Monitor and report on relevant news stories including mentions of RCC or peer organizations
  • Track and report on topical and social trends
  • Assist in the development, planning, production, and staffing of press and outreach events.
  • Research and compile editorial calendars and identify press opportunities
  • Produce media lists on assigned topics
  • Write blogs, press releases, media advisory and other materials
  • Digital outreach through social media channels
  • Update the Conservancy’s press webpage.
  • Prepare talking points and assist in interview briefings.
  • Other tasks as required.
Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor’s degree or completing a bachelor’s degree.
  • Completed relevant classwork.
  • Experience and interest in media relations
  • Interest in and knowledge of the local environmental issues that face Rock Creek
  • Detail oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prior knowledge of basic HTML preferred.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Strong computer skills necessary.
  • Working knowledge of Salesforce is a plus.
  • This is an unpaid internship. You may need to bring your own computer and other resources to complete projects and tasks.
Keystone Project: 

Every 3-month+ communications internship will culminate in a keystone project that supports Rock Creek Conservancy’s mission to restore Rock Creek as a natural oasis for all people to appreciate and protect. This project proposal will be submitted to your supervisor at the beginning of the internship. Example projects: photo essay, report, short documentary video, press event, blog series, or social media campaign.

Pay: This is an unpaid position. Requested Start Date: Rolling
Hours per week: Negotiable. Minimum 10 hrs/week.
Duration: Negotiable depending on candidate. 3 month minimum.
