Description:
The M-NCPPC Department of Parks in Montgomery County seeks a Natural Resources Specialist in its Park Planning and Stewardship Division to assist the Natural Resource Stewardship Section's (NRS) Wildlife Ecology work program. NRS has primary responsibility for protecting the natural environment - the Park's "original infrastructure". NRS provides leadership and guidance to park operations managers in preserving park natural resources. Work focuses on: Wildlife Resources – including inventories, wildlife protection, habitat management, deer management, and wildlife conflict resolution (the position will function primarily to assist to White-tailed Deer Management Program).

Duties: 

  • Assist Wildlife Staff to plan and conduct Infra-red triggered camera surveys to estimate deer population densities
  • Assist staff to map and prepare camera sites
  • Assist staff to deploy cameras and maintain bait
  • Assist staff to organize photo database and analyze photos
  • Prepare reports for individual camera survey projects
  • Assist Wildlife Staff to prepare and/or conduct comprehensive managed deer hunting programs
  • Assist staff to map hunting locations
  • Assist staff to plan, distribute and/or install Park Closure signage
  • Assist staff to conduct shooting qualification sessions
  • Assist staff to conduct participant training, oversight and supervision
  • Assist staff to conduct participant support, i.e. Check-in/check-out, guidance, deer drives and perimeter security, deer retrieval, etc...
  • Assist staff to collect data & manage data files
  • Assist to prepare, maintain and conduct Park Police-based sharpshooting deer management operations
  • Assist staff to acquire equipment & supplies
Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's Degree in natural resource management, environmental science, forestry, wildlife management, or related field; and
  • One year of related experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver's license, or the ability to acquire one.
