Description:
We are looking for skillful and enthusiastic individuals to support our River Restoration programs for the fall of 2018. This internship provides excellent exposure to the world of watershed stewardship, ecological restoration, low impact development (LID), and biodiversity conservation. The position will require support on implementing and documenting a variety of restoration activities related to our programs including aspects of environmental education, outdoor recreation events, and working with volunteer groups.
Qualifications:
- A college student or novel professional with a strong desire to do both indoor and outdoor work teaming up with other interns,
- AWS staff and partners.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Good physical condition and willingness to work in the outdoors using different tools and equipment (after proper training),
- working under hot, muddy, cold and/or wet weather conditions.
- Travel to different sites within central Prince George’s County, Maryland, and eastern Washington, D.C.
- Good written skills to help us write blog entries, communicate with partners, help us craft restoration plans, etc.
- Good oral communication skills to help us supervise and educate volunteers, students and the public.
- Candidates should have college coursework or background in biological sciences, environmental sciences, natural resources
- management, ecological restoration, forestry and related disciplines.
- Commit to be available at least 2 days per week, days and hours are negotiable, but preferably the team will need to work as a unit.
- Interest in working with elementary school students a plus
- Must be reliable and responsible.
- Proficient in MS Office.
- Knowledge of GPS/GIS desirable.
- Landscape Architecture experience a plus; exposure to Adobe Suite, Autocad, and Sketch Up
Duties:
- Assist with logistics and field work related to our ecological restoration programs, including wetland restoration, stream restoration,
- invasive plant management, SAV propagation, reforestation and meadow restoration.
- Assist in the propagation of native terrestrial and aquatic plants at a nursery facility.
- Help AWS staff coordinate and lead volunteer events to engage the public in hands-on restoration activities (including some
- Saturdays).
- Help AWS staff coordinate and lead outdoor recreation events engaging the public such as canoeing or pontoon boat tours.
- Assist in the facilitation of education programs for local students
- Conduct field data collection (related to vegetation, wildlife, etc.) and data entry.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of restoration projects through site assessments and photo-documentation.
- Maintain trash traps to capture and analyze solid waste that enters the Anacostia River and its tributaries.
- Assist AWS staff in tree plantings and maintenance.
- Conduct tree surveys to assess maintenance needs and general tree health conditions.
- Assist in basic maintenance routines such as weeding, mowing, wetland fence repairs, watering, mulching, etc.
- Assist AWS staff in the installation and monitoring of LID technologies.
